What drives team sports in the nation's capital?

Basketball runs deep in DC. Playground courts, recreation leagues and high school programs have produced generations of college and professional players, and coaches here want basketball uniforms that look sharp in a packed gym. School sports are organized through the District of Columbia State Athletic Association (DCSAA), with public, charter and private schools playing in their own leagues before meeting in citywide championships.

Football is a fall tradition at schools across all eight wards, and the city's soccer community reflects its international population, with youth and adult clubs ordering soccer kits for games in neighborhood parks and on fields around the city. Flag football is a favorite in rec and adult leagues. DC summers are hot and humid while winters bring cold snaps, so teams pair breathable game jerseys with hoodies or rain jackets. Many rosters also draw players from the Maryland and Virginia suburbs, and our home state is covered on the Maryland page.
